Milan’s signature designs of bird sculptures and fish- and leaf-shaped bowls, trays, and serving ware represent the very essence of midcentury modern design. The publication, Emil Milan Midcentury Master, is filled with history, stories, artifacts, and photographs — along with the largest collection of Milan’s work, including dozens of his finest creations. The book also contains insight into the late artist’s process, methods, and teaching practices.

“Something can be done about it!” is the motto of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers.

“It is used to rally troops or galvanize a group to overcome obstacles. It can be deployed to inspire a community to take action when faced with a devastating catastrophe.”

So begins the editorial of the newest Clearwater, Florida, edition of Freedom Magazine, the voice of the Church of Scientology, which is now online on the Freedom website. And throughout the issue are photo stories demonstrating exactly how earnest these volunteers are about carrying out their creed.

The 88-page issue focuses on Hurricane Irma and the thousands of Volunteer Minister hours dedicated to helping the city recover.

The story began when Irma veered westward, predicting a potentially devastating direct impact on the Tampa Bay area. Volunteer Ministers boarded up store windows throughout downtown Clearwater. They provided supplies and assistance in shelters.

They restored Clearwater Beach to its previous pristine condition. They patched torn roofs, cut down and hauled away toppled trees and filled 7,000 heavy-duty trash bags with debris.

They distributed 3,000 gallons of water and 162,000 pounds of ice to local residents. They provided 6,600 hot meals in North Greenwood and East Gateway. Their help continued until every remnant of storm damage was gone from downtown Clearwater, Clearwater Beach, and nearby neighborhoods.

The Freedom special edition continues with a brief roundup of Scientology Volunteer Minister response to disasters, from the 9/11 New York terrorist attacks through natural and manmade disasters that circled the globe, to the devastating 2017 hurricane season and Mexico earthquake.

The issue closes with an overview of the other humanitarian programs carried out by Clearwater Scientologists throughout the region and profiles on several leading members of the local humanitarian community.

​​​Scores of Volunteer Ministers from the Church of Scientology have responded to the devastating Northern California wildfires affecting many thousands over the past 10 days.

Some 15 fires raged through the wine country in Northern California, ravaging some 220,000 acres, destroying nearly 6,000 homes and other structures and killing more than 40.

While some 60,000 people have been given the go-ahead to return to their homes, 40,000 remain under ordered evacuation.

Our attention has primarily been on providing supplies support to shelters. As of this morning, some evacuees are gradually getting the green light to return home. While more than 40,000 remain evacuated and our supply efforts will continue, our attention will begin to shift to providing spiritual succor to individuals and families as they confront rebuilding their shattered lives.

Volunteer Ministers (VMs) were dispatched from the San Francisco and Sacramento Churches as well as a Mission of the Church at the epicenter of the disaster in Sonoma. As well as providing spiritual assistance to victims of the fires, many of whom have lost everything, the VMs have been running supply lines to distribution centers in the area working with other faith-based groups, the Red Cross and Northern California VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster).

Is Tummy Time a new phenomenon?

Tummy Time is when a baby is placed face-down on their tummy and must push their torso up and lift their head to see the world around them. Tummy Time helps babies strengthen their neck, back, and chest muscles, and it is the basis for mastering other gross motor skills like pushing themselves up, rolling over, and eventually sitting and crawling.

Until the early 1990s, parents used to put babies to sleep on their stomachs, so babies practiced Tummy Time all the time, strengthening their back and neck muscles. In the early 1990s, health authorities started to recommend that babies sleep on their backs to avoid SIDS. The recommendation led to a dramatic decrease in the prevalence of SIDS but, at the same time, created a huge increase in the prevalence of many medical and developmental issues, since babies were no longer strengthening those back and neck muscles enough. Why not? Because Tummy Time became hard and frustrating for young babies who weren’t used to it, and parents started to do Tummy Time practice less and less to avoid their baby’s unhappy reaction.

Today, health authorities recommend that babies should start practicing Tummy Time – when they are awake and supervised – from the first day of life in order to avoid medical problems and stay on track with their motor development.
